News Magazine Group

As far as our project goes, I feel we all have a general concept about what is going on. We made our outline of the broadcast which gave us a better understanding. Everyone in the group completes their work on time and does their part with decency. Our group functions well together because we have the right combination of people who want to give orders and people who have no problem sitting back and taking the orders. So at this point I feel our group will do a superb job on our News Magazine project and will finish it with a better understanding of what a news magazine broadcast is all about.

Rhetorical Analysis of a News Show

I chose to watch CNN on October 14. The story I viewed was about the spread of wild fires in California, which have become much worse now. It was easy for the station to gain the viewer's attention because when someone sees a huge fire on a TV screen, they are going to zone in. So of course, CNN started by showing pictures of the fires. Then they went to the news part of the story and begain to tell about how many people had to be evacuated and how many acres of land had been destroyed. The story did not end with a positive note, but it did end with more pictures of the fires. Thich kept the viewer on the channel for the next story which most people would not normally stay to watch. It was about the stock market.

Thank You For Smoking

Thank You For Smoking was a very entertaining movie. I found it very ironic that the movie was about smoking cigarettes, but no one smoked throughout the movie. It was also interesting how Nick began to take his son with him on his business excursions. I feel this was good for his son and taught him a great deal. The way Nick went about talking to his clients and how he went about persuading his audience was very unique. He had a great feel for people and new what buttons to push and the right time to push them. I personally wish I was better at that. I love to argue and I normally am pretty good at it, just sometimes I take things too far. Nick was a great speaker and persuader, and I learned a good bit from him by watching Thank You For Smoking. He taught me that as long as I believe that I am right, I am right and can change my adversary's mind. It seems persuasion is more about confidence and weakening your opponent than it is being exactly correct on the subjuct.

Image Analysis

I feel this magazine cover has a much deeper meaning than any other magazine with your average superstar athlete on the cover. Ken Griffey Jr.'s previous years have been filled with stints on the DL and being benched with injuries; a very rough time for Griffey. That is why I feel this cover has a much deeper meaning. Griffey's glasses being lifted up is like a burden being lifted off his chest. He was finally injury free. I also feel that Griffey Jr. looking up to the sky, is a sign of him looking up to the bright side and that his career can only improve from the past several years. Another aspect I picked up on was where Griffey's hand is on the bill of his hat and glasses, it appears almost as if he is saluting God for everything he has been blessed with.

Myself as a Writer

As far as strong points as a writer, I feel poetry and music are my strong points. I love to attempt to make my words flow smoothly together. As far as my weak point, I would say research papers. I hate looking up information to write on because I would much rather prefer to right on something I enjoy and where I can say what I please. When it comes to how I like to write, it all depends on what I am writing on. If its poetry or music, I normally can write anywhere and do not get distracted because that is what I enjoy and I get in the zone, but when it comes to research papers and everything else I have to have complete silence and be alone because that information does not flow through my head like poetry and lyrics. When I actually am writing, I start with pencil and paper and get down my basic information and thesis, and then from there I got straight to my laptop and applying my information. I do not really have a prefered place to type, I can type wherever I may wonder. As far as improving on writing I do not really feel I have one thing that stands out that I need to improve on, I think I mainly need to improve on my pre-writing and research.
